A sharpening filter would be a brilliant addition.

bozo: Hi there! :)

Splash unfortunately doesn't support WMV at all.

A minor adjustment that might prevent some irritation: make the up/down arrows function as volume up/down, and PgUp/PgDwn as the only keys for previous/next file.

The thought behind this is that when jumping through a file, you might accidently touch the up/down arrow. This would switch to a completely different video file, which is quite annoying. This can happen more often than you might think, especially on laptops. In the same line of reasoning, on laptops/small keyboard, the + and - keys are not available as 'single' keys, i.e. increasing the volume should currently be done with Fn+NumpadPlus. Changing these key sets as suggested above will solve that issue as well.

+/- isn't the only way to change volume - wheel up/down, zoom in/out (gestures on the touchpad) works the same way.
On the other hand - not all laptops have dedicated page up/down keys - on my Compaq it is Fn+Up and Fn+Down.
As for me - up/down is better for volume control, but for next/prev - up/down + modifier (ctrl e.g.)
And as I know key mapping is planned for future - so it would be possible to bind keys as you want.

Your suggestion would work perfectly well while keeping in mind both of the keyboard layouts. I'm in love with the simplicity of the program, hence custom key binding would be obsolete imho, as long as it doesn't lead to problems or irritations.

Up = Volume up
Down = Volume down
Ctrl + Up = Previous file
Ctrl + Down = Next file

would be great.

My God, I'm so utterly surprised by the quality of the decoding engine, even for SD material. Normally I couldn't find a better one than the integrated XviD decoder of The KMPlayer. But putting two decoded frames next to each other, Splash's result was so much more natural and showed significantly less typical encoding artifacts! Do you have some kind of sleek post-processing on it by default? (using Lite version with hardware acceleration on).

To some extent even the audio sounded less annoying through headphones: is there a compressor on it by default or something?

Either way, I really hope this player will evolve into the perfect one for anybody: even though I know quite a lot about video compression compared to most, I think a playback program should be as rudimentary as possible, and Splash currently is, and should remain so. Apart from some interface glitches, it's mighty fine as it is. Some more interface suggestions might be:

- ability to stay on top while playing a file
- a mini-view with no screen elements other than the video itself
- easy move, allowing one to grab the entire window by just dragging from somewhere in the video window (of course necessary when mini-view should be implemented

Short of the glitches with jumping back/forward as specified earlier, I love this player and am using it as my standard for AVI/MKV/MPG already.

Hi there!

I love your approach to creating a lightweight (unlike WinDVD and the likes) all-in-one
playback solution with integrated motion interpolation and Splash looks quite
promising to me.

But first, there's this:

When adjusting the volume using the mouse wheel, a bug will decrease the volume,
regardless of the scrolling direction. Sorry if this was mentioned before.

Well that aside it works flawlessly here, I tried it with HD x264 MKVs for now,
because that is what I watch most.

Splash raises CPU usage from 2 to 6 per cent and GPU load from 0 to 6 per cent
for 720p, which is awesome.

I also threw a couple of 1080i MPEG2 TS at it, The Daily Show and The Colbert Report,
which, I guess, were directly recorded from HDTV and it looks incredibly fluid :o
They are 30 fps anyways, but don't look as fluid with any other player I have,
or maybe that is my imagination, but I dont think so. Is it deinterlacing only?

For the TS's CPU will jump to ~16 per cent, with zero GPU load so I guess it is not
hw accelerated, but I dont really care.

Right now I am not using SL to watch movies because I need SPDIF output to get
surround sound.

What caught my eye is that it says in the options menu that motion interpolation
will only work for SD streams, that is NOT cool, guys, we need that for HD x264 MKVs!
It's 2010, Xvid SD is so nineties

Come on, we need to get over this 24p thing. I am using some nerdy avisynth scripts
for now to get 60hz and will continue to do so if Splash cannot deliver that.

But I think you can and I hope you will :)

I know you're going to add support for Vorbis Audio, but: Is it possible to use a external DirectShow Codec instead of just displaying "Not supported yet" until SplashLite supports it? I have CoreVorbis installed and still no sound. I'm sure that I read it would try to use DirectShow Codecs then. Or does that not affect to Audio?
I tried with and without HW decoding.

Hi guys, lots of posts but will try to address all questions/problems :)
Thank you all for your suggestions, we note it and will consider all.
bozo wrote: ...
1. Playlist docking to main player window.
2. An option (maybe in EcoMode menu) which define what player do when finished play of the movie.
for example: A. Close player; B. Shutdown Computer; C. Suspend
the last two options with countdown and cancel button.
3. Information screen: CPU load; current/total_frames and option to show more or basic informations.
4. Subtitles: An option for subtitles without end time to be display with spec time
for example: (time in ms [set by user]) x (each char in current sub line)
as example for "Hello!" word would be 250ms x 6chars so this line will be displayed for 1.5s

Unable to play wmv movies from link below. There are a lot of VC-1 clips.
Apple H.264 trailers are played without any problems.
Hi, thanks for nice feedback!
1/2. It is planned.
3/4. This features are not currently planned, but thanks for suggestion, we are considering all user suggestions.
We are also going to add support for WMV soon.

It is planned :)
Guillaume wrote:...Do you have some kind of sleek post-processing on it by default? (using Lite version with hardware acceleration on).
Splash Lite 1.2 does not support hardware acceleration for Xvid/dvix decoding.
Good quality video is the result of our high quality video renderer and SD2HD upcaling solution. SD2HD is integrated with Splash and will be available by default with all Splash versions, it uses the best available scaling method providing sharp and clean picture (if source video quality is reasonable of course).

Motion2 is designed for HD videos :)
The option in settings concerns probably SD2HD upscaling.

At the moment there is no way for Splash Lite 1.2 to use external codecs for Vorbis.
Soon Vorbis audio will be supported.

My sugestions :

1. subtitles: smoother, nicer font, maybe multiple font styles and option to chose font size and subtitle position with easy adjustement with shortcuts ; example: ctrl+ -/+ for size, shift + up/down for position.

2. Keep audio sync (+/- ms) ,for blueray when avaible. I play movies on 32" LCD Philips from PC with 5.1 PC speakers and TV has video delay for image procesing (especialy with HD Natural Motion ON).
The best way was to use BSplayer with AC3Filter and use the Delays feature for all channels :
http://www.softpedia.com/screenshots/AC ... a-RC_2.png
with Audio/video sync option doesn't work good. (it works for few minutes then it will go out of sync again)
http://www.softpedia.com/screenshots/AC ... a-RC_3.png

When I have time I will test the lipsync adjustement of Splash Lite. For playing BD with menus, players like Total Media Theatre doesn't have lipsync adjustement.

3. Option to chose dynamic range/output levels Full 0-255 or limited 16-235. For PC 0-255 is best for offering deep black but for TV I think 16-235 is best/most used. This option is included in Nvidia driver but for loooong time the option doesn't work anymore after 181.22 driver on windows XP. (I use output levels option from CoreAVC for good black on PC)

The most exciting feature for me is Motion 2, I can't wait to try. I hope will be like Philips HD Natural motion without artifacts and sometimes unnatural smooth or other 100hz procesing system, but on PC monitor. I like smooth video :D
