dvd playback

Recently I was searching for a nice, light weight video player and I found Splash Lite player that I like very much. It is fast, nice looking and have a good futures for video playback.

But I am so very surpised that it does not support dvd playback.

Seriously? One of the most popular formats in today's market, when you can buy hundreds and thousands of dvds at every regular shoping centre?

Why bother then with dvd exclusive TS and VOB file association, if player can't read IFO files and display dvd menu? Bad joke?

You may say it is designed for HD content playback. OK, fine. By then why add mp3 and other popular `not HD` format support and playback but not dvd discs?

It's because of the additional charges from licensing agreements. Splash players would be much more expensive.

Thank you for your reply. I understand that. You can't do much about it.

But what I don't fully understand is why there are still free of charge video players that support dvd playback like vlc media player (even the latest version)? Different licensing rules or something?

As long as the video player is distributed freely there's no license fee.
