[Official] Broadcom Crystal HD Thread

Sun Jul 31, 2011 11:27 pm

Hello everybody!

I decided to open this topic to share problems about Broadcom Crystal HD and Splash :)
I will update this post regularly.

Hardwares: AzureWave AW-VD904 & AW-VD920
Latest driver version: 3.5.0 (v3.7.20.0)
Tested Splash version: 1.11.0

The problem is that Crystal HD uses "Broadcom Video Decoder" as codec.
It reduces quality so much specially with some video files.
The benefit of Splash is that forces Crystal HD not to work with it.

Here's the quality difference:

Splash with Crystal HD:

WMP12 with Crystal HD:

MPC-HC with Crystal HD:

CPU:

Nvidia VP2:

Unfortunately Nvidia PureVideo HD (VP2) can't play 1920x1080i AVC High Profile videos smoothly.
[Video Engine bottleneck] I'm using 8600M GT 256MB DDR2 (v275.33):

Known Issues

 Known Issues:

Windows 7 SP1 64bit (AW-VD920):

Note:
Enabling "Force video overlay" will fix the following first and second bugs.
Overlay Mixer looks exactly like the thing in Windows XP SP3 32bit but reduces quality so much.
It also makes video color to work in limited dynamic range (16-235):

1. While opening the program, it forces windows to switch to Basic Theme.
It'll cause horizontal stutter specially in Fullscreen mode.
Basic Theme makes everything jerky too like window movement.

2. Many video files play like this:

3. The Video bitrate doesn't work:

4. The seekbar doesn't work with some videos when Crystal HD is enabled:

5. Downscale! The video is 1920x1080 29.97i :?

I found very interesting information. Here's why Splash is better solution for CrystalHD:

Windows Media Player 12:

Splash:

Splash uses its codec that has better quality and makes CrystalHD's chip warmer,
but other programs use Broadcom codec that decreases quality so much specially while de-interlacing :)

Splash is the only player for Windows at the moment I think that outputs true 1920x1080 video . All other players I know reduce the resolution.

Hello everyone,
I just got myself one Broadcom CrystalHD and discovered that I am unable to play FullHD movies using just DirectShow filters on Windows (rescales to 720p)
It seems that Splash Pro is the only Windows software able to decode and output 1080p using this card, so I downloaded the free trial to test it.
Unfortunately I couldn't test correctly... The software is forcing overlay mode even with "Force overlay" unchecked! My lil GMA950 video overlay hardware has full horizontal resolution (1920 pixels) but only 600 or less for vertical resolution, so no FullHD playback. I need it to use VMR9 or EVR renderer.
Is there any way to force EVR?

I am using an Acer Aspire One D250 with an Atom N270, 2GB RAM, Windows 7 and AzureWave AW-VD920 (Broadcom CrystalHD BCM70015).
Splash Pro version: 1.13.2 (tral)
CrystalHD driver: 3.6.9

Thanks

Yes, and it's annoying. I still have it on my old laptop but it has Nvidia 8600M GT.
Recent netbooks are cheap right now, then you can buy a new one, even Bay Trail can play 4K H.264.
Unfortunately, Splash looks dead...
