Cannot play certain files

Just installed Pro EX last night but it wont play some AVI's or MP4 files. Is there way around this? Some files ranging from phones & tablets devices to previously recorded/converted avi files from other software. Is there a way to re encode these files so they will work with Splash? I tried converting with Freemake but it doesnt like. Is there specific settings that i need to use so Splash will play them?
