Cannot smoothly play .mkv with GPU Acceration

Sat Aug 21, 2010 6:56 pm

Hi, I'm giving your splash player a try and it seems that on some .mkvs whenever I turn on GPU acceration the image stutters, pixelates and flashes green.

I have the same issue with MPC as well when using DXVA. I think issue maybe related to ATI GPU/Driver

It must be the driver. I have an nVidia GTX 260 and plays smoothly.

Joco1114 while ati drivers are generally crap, it doesn't necessarily "must" be that. I don't want to get a jet engine for directx 11 :P

Its only on selected mkv so I'm guessing its a codec issue. I can play certain mkvs just fine.
Another interesting thing I've noticed is that the GPU sign doesn't show up when I'm playing avi files.

I guess that's because almost nobody using AVC (H.264) with avi container (e.g. because avi doesn't support all features of AVC).
There should be codec Xvid/Divx/Mpeg-4 ASP so it isn't possible to playback with hardware acceleration on your card (full acceleration is only for VC-1 and AVC). But this is so old and "easy" codec, that any CPU can handle this.
Desktop (Intel i7-970, ATI 5870, Windows 7 x64)
Acer Aspire TimelineX 3830TG (Intel i5-2410M, nVidia GT540M, Windows 7 x64)
PS Vita, Nokia N8

It depends on the video codec as MKV is just a container.

If you play the came file in MPC in DXVA mode, the same artifact will occur ;)

Every player on my computer worked correctly with the dancing girls video! :)
Not a HD quality, but with Splash it was enjoyable without any picture error.

Codec: FFDSHOW or built in (GPU acc where possible)
