Dark scenes look artificial (video level issue?)

Wed Nov 24, 2010 4:22 pm

Hi,

I am testing Splash PRO against MPC-HC. I love Splash PRO ease of use and Motion2, however in my setup (ATI 6850 -> Panasonic AE2000 projector) dark scenes in Splash PRO look brighter than normal and very artificial. I strongly believe this is a bug b/c MPC-HC look ok.

The projector has an option to view the pixels that are sent as a waveform, so for example you can see that the blacks on MPC-HC are close to 0, but in Splash PRO they are elevated. I think this may be an issue with video-output levels (0-255 vs. 16-235). I am not sure.

Can can send you a screenshot of the waveforms of MPC-HC vs. SplashPRO

Any update about the video levels? I am using an ATI card with latest drivers and video levels are wrong using Motion2, can you check? Setting video levels in ATI control panel does not fix it.

The only issue I found with Motion2 is the grayscale is slightly off. But black level remains unaffected. Are you sending RGB (Video Levels) from your ATI card?

My ATI card is set to send RGB full levels to my projector (in the pixel format configuration), and no matter of what I do in the ATI video level configuration (which lets you choose from 0-255 to 16-235 and you can change in real time along with video gamma, etc.) Splash PRO always sends 16-235 to the projector resulting in scenes to look bad.

Can somebody from Mirillis test this? I'd be happy to send more information if need be.

Thanks in advance.

ATI cards have issues sending 0-255. The latest drivers did fix the problem but they also introduce few other issues.

Hi - Can you tell me in which driver the problem was "fixed"? I am running the June driver (11.6 driver) which is the latest one released. In addition, I also use a different player called MPC-HC and that one does not exhibit the issue.

Anybody from Mirillis care to comment?

Do you experience the same issues with:
- hw acceleration disabled and motion2 enabled
- hw acceleration disabled and motion2 disabled?

antorsae, I think we have a pretty similar issue here. I'll just wait for some solution.

I really wish you would add the option to set full RGB or limited RGB (16-235) in the software itself. My HDTV does not seem to support full RGB and Nvidia's drivers don't seem to offer an option for this. MPC+ffdshow allows you to set this nicely in software.
