Which option should I use if I want to receive 5.1 from my laptop on my homecinema set using HDMI?

You can choose 5.1 or HDMI Bitstream? What is the difference between these two?
My Homecinema set doesn't display the type of sound it's receiving (stereo, DD, DTS etc)

Bitstreaming sends the original audio information to a receiver and receiver is decoding audio.
Using 5.1 output results in audio beeing decoded by Splash and then this decoded audio is sent to the receiver/speakers.
