Stereo and Multichannel recording

Sat Nov 10, 2012 1:47 am

I stumbled upon Action! on Steam Greenlight and decided to give it a try, hoping the software would provide multichannel recording that works with Vegas unlike FRAPS (which is the capture software I currently used). I ended up with two concerns regarding the audio recording which ultimately doesn't warrant making the switch for now, despite the majority of the other features being superior.

1) Multichannel
Many of us already know that Sony doesn't like the format used for multichannel recording in both Action! and FRAPS, and we all know that Sony doesn't seen keen on fixing or adding proper support for more formats. I have heard that an old version works fine in that regards however since it used different compression methods or something. Is there any plan or way this could be included in future releases? As in giving a choice in the settings on how you want the audio to be recorded for the video.

2) Stereo
By now it seems the "untick multichannel recording" is the quick, easy fix for the multichannel problem with Vegas. It works fine when doing it with FRAPS while keeping my sound setup as 5.1, but when doing so with Action! it will only record the left and right speakers, leaving every single sound in other speakers out of the recording, which in the case of the game I tried it with, meant every single SFX and all I had was the music. While I can see why it does this, I don't necessarily feel like having to change my channels every single time I want to record, especially when I keep these kind of software turned on pretty often for 'on the fly' recording. Any input on this one? This is the main reason I won't be making the switch for now, so I would say it's my biggest concern compared to other software.

Oh and just in case, I run Win7 x64 and my sound card is an HT Omega Striker 7.1 with the latest drivers.

Sorry for the double post, but using the "extract audio" context menu I found in another topic in this forum, I managed to get my multichannel recording to work in Vegas, albeit it does need some additional steps that I'd like avoiding, but it'll do for now.

In the end I'll still grab Action! mainly for it's desktop recording capabilities, which are, in my experience, better than the software I've tried. I'll just keep both my current one and Action! next to each other :]

I still wouldn't mind having an answer for my two questions above though, so don't hesitate :p

Good that you've figured out the multichannel recording and decided to get Action! As for your two questions above I'll forward this message to the developers and they will see what can be done.

And I don't regret it one bit so far! It sure was useful in recording my desktop activities for a couple of hours (for a tutorial video) and gave me great results.

Hopefully Action! will keep on improving over time, it's definitely worth it. Thanks for the reply!
