Using Action! to record older games.

I recently purchased the full version of Action! to record playing through Syberia but Action! won't record the gameplay. Audio (both mine and in-game) is fine. I have windows 8 and am running the game through Steam on 256 colours on lowest res (1024x768).

I can't record using the 'game record' function; it is greyed out even when I load the game. I tried using the 'desktop region' function but this just gave me a broken recording that couldn't be played at all. When I recorded my whole screen it worked up until I loaded the game. At this point in the recording the progress bar stops and it's just a frozen image of my desktop with my audio recording over the top.

Any tips on using Action! to record older games? As far as I know the program is working. It recorded a test of Portal just fine.

Make sure that your game is running under DirectX8 or higher.
