Mp4 recording issues

Mon Mar 02, 2020 12:31 am

I'm experiencing recording issues only with MP4 format only. AVI works, but it slow downs my PC and therefore is not optimal.

If I use game capture mode, Action will start recording but it will actually save to the output file only the first few frames, regardless of the actual recording time. I.E.: I've recorded a session of 2-3 hours (Action HUD worked correctly and stated it was continously recording), and then I've found out it saved 274KB and only a few frames.
If I use screen recording, footage recording will start normally, but whenever I stop recording, Mirillis will freeze and will never recover. If I stop Action, Action will then restart automatically but the recorded file will be corrupted and with no size (0KB)

Changing hardware acceleration, resolution and framerate doesn't change any behaviour stated previously.

My PC configuration is:
  • CPU: i7 4770s (according to Intel® Driver & Support Assistant no driver or software was found, but it seems I'm not able to install any driver related to my CPU)
  • GPU: NVidia GTX 1050 Ti (driver version: 442.50)
  • MoBo: Asus Z87-k
  • OS: Windows 10 Pro (version 1809, build 17763.1039)
I've installed mirillis latest version (4.1.2) and I'm not sure when this behaviour started (possibly after a recent update, but I can't confirm that... Should I downgrade to test this?)
DirectX diagnostic tool isn't reporting any issue ("No problems found" in every page), but I'll post the "save all information..." if requested

What should I do to resume reconding with MP4 encoding?

Please provide us your PC DxDiag report. It will help us investigate your problem.
To run a dxdiag report follow the steps below:

If you are running Windows Vista or higher go to your task bar.
Click on, "Start Button".
Click on, "Run".
In the pop-up window enter dxdiag and hit ok.
The DirectX Diagnostic Tool pop-up window should appear.
Click on, "Save all information tab".
"Save As" window should be present.
Click on, "Save" (The file should be saved to your desktop as dxdiag)
Close the DirectX Diagnostic Tool.

Thanks for you interest and for approving this post.

Before this post was approved, I had some time to further test the bug and after 1 or 2 hours of googling and trying things out, I've found the bug: it turned out my issue is caused by a conflict on the "exclusive control" of audio devices with another software called "Voice Mod". VoiceMod, as the name suggest, is a real time voice changing software which uses another free tool called VoiceMeter for its "magic" redirection of audio channels: Before installing VoiceMod, I've used VoiceMeter standalone and to redirect audio (specifically, I wanted to record only my gameplay audio without recording TS / discord audio) and rarely had any issue: VoiceMeter standalone crashed from time to time, but Action ALWAYS behaved correctly while using VoiceMeter as the default audio device (7.1 audio channels were recorded correctly and with no distortion), so this leaves VoiceMod as the offender.

I found out that the issue was related to the audio because the very small mp4 videos I was able to record had no audio at all, so when I've attempted to record only audio using mirillis, any mp4 recording attempt to my "default" device or my headset was stuck at "00:00" and the output audio file was always corrupted.

I can't recall if I tried out both .avi and .mp4 format, but I'm absolutely sure that as long as I left "exclusive control" on my headset microphone, the resulting recorded audio of my microphone by Action was empty and corrupted, but as soon as I've deactivated the exclusive control of VoiceMod on my microphone, I was able to record my microphone with mp4 format (but still no video... which is odd). Any attempt of recording the default windows audio failed.

So in the end it's partially solved: I've uninstalled VoiceMod and Action is working again as expected, but I'm planning to use VoiceMod again in the future. Is there a way to make them both work despite such conflict on audio devices? Or can you develop a feature to work around this issue?

For the sake of completeness for any developer out there (I'm a developer too :D ) and for anyone that will encounter my same error, I've added both DxDiag files before VoiceMod was uninstalled and after VoiceMod was uninstalled. For some reason attachments extensions are quite strict, so I've worked around it by adding ".7z" to the file extensions: remove the ".7z" extension for the real file, I've kept the remaining extension (.txt and .xml) will be the correct one.
The "old" file has some interesting lines, like the following:

Code: Select all

+++ WER9 +++:
Fault bucket 1847229968501674280, type 5
Event Name: AppHangB1

Thanks again and I hope this will help you :D

I've noticed now you explicity asked for .txt files, I've added the DxDiag-new.txt file (I still have the file format issue, remove the trailing .7z format for the actual file)

I've reinstalled VoiceMod and everything is working fine: both audio and mic are being recorded just fine (both with and without voice change and with or without exclusive control on microphone), so in the end I don't know exactly what changed. The only thing I did before reinstalling again VoiceMod was to update windows 10 to the latest major build, but I can't confirm or grant it is the solution that solved my issue.

Anyway, sorry for wasting your time, but I still hope this will help you or anyone else whom will find my same issues.
Keep up with the good work, I'm using Action since 2014 and Action has proven again it wasn't the cause of the problem
