No Audio Recorded with Certain Games [SOLVED]

Mon Sep 03, 2012 11:40 pm

Hey,

I've just bought Mirillis Action! because the trial version worked perfectly for me. Now that I've bought it though things aren't going as smoothly.

I started with recording The Darkness II using the trial version, which was perfect. After buying Action! I tried recording some Battlefield 3 and there was no sound. I've tried changing all audio settings in several different games and couldn't find a solution or source of the problem.

Out of the games I tried recording, the following didn't have any audio;
- Battlefield 3
- Counter Strike: Global Offensive
- Blacklight: Retribution

Other games I've tried which worked fine, with audio and all;
- The Darkness II
- Guild Wars 2

Checking the properties of the recorded video it says there's audio present, but no sound is played at all. There's no static or noises either, just silence.

Is this a known issue with certain games, and if so is there a solution? Recording just audio works fine with all games, but when recording video there's no audio with the select few. I've made sure all my system, audio-card (Xonar Essence STX) and game settings were set to 16bit, 48KHz quality, which I think should match with Action!. But even then, it's strange some games work perfectly fine, while others don't do anything audio-wise.

EDIT: I just realized that I did not test the trial with just The Darkness II, I also did a test with the Battlefield 3 Campaign. I remember there was audio present then because I noticed the volume difference in the audio between Action! and Fraps. I retried recording the Battlefield 3 campaign instead of online gameplay, but now there was once again no audio, even though I'm positive I used the same settings as in the test I did with the trial.

I uninstalled Action! and reinstalled the trial version, and tried recording the Battlefield 3 campaign again, together with some CS:GO, but there was still no audio to be heard. I did notice one thing which may be important; when a friend of mine came online on Origin, the 'bleep' you hear as a message pops up was recorded by Action!, meaning it is recording system sounds, but is not recognizing the sound of certain games as such. I'm at a loss here, since I'm now assuming it has to do with the games themselves, but I have no way of changing advanced sound-settings for those as far as I know.

All help and/or suggestions are appreciated, and thanks in advance.

I hope this includes the settings you are looking for.
My audio drivers are in Dutch by the way, and 'oortelefoon' means 'headphones', I think that's the only thing that needed translation.

EDIT: in the video recording options in Action! I have my audio settings set to 'Record system sounds' checked, and 'Allow multi-channel audio recording' unchecked. The microphone option was set to 'Do not record'.

Thank you for looking into it.

Okay, so after doing some more tests, also using both Fraps and Dxtory, it doesn't seem to be a problem with Action!. I also doubt it's a problem with the games, it most likely has to do with Windows or perhaps it's a driver issue.

What I found out is that all 3 recording programs I tried didn't record certain applications any more (they did before registering Action!), and they're the same for all of them. It's not just the games I mentioned (BF3, CS:GO, B:R), foobar2000 for example wasn't recorded either.
This issue seems to correspond with a Windows bug, where some applications don't get muted, even though you completely mute them in the sound mixer. The applications whose sound is not recorded by any of the recording applications can not be muted individually by using the Windows sound mixer. Applications which can be muted have their sound recorded without problems.

I have been looking around for a solution for this problem but up until now I haven't been able to find one. It doesn't seem to be a common problem, and the one forum I found which directly corresponded to my problem didn't offer a solution for the OP, and neither did it for me. I have tried what, to me, seemed to be the most probable solution; to uninstall all audio devices and drivers other than the device you want applications to use; but it doesn't seem to change anything.
I will now reluctanty try to reinstall my audio drivers for good measure, even though they are up-to-date and are working properly for all other purposes. If that doesn't work I might have to re-roll to a backup from before registering Action! and see if that works.

If anyone has any extra information or ideas regarding this problem I'd be glad to hear them.

EDIT: The problem was solved by a simple reinstall of my audio drivers. Sorry to bother you with a stupid Windows bug, which turned out to be an easy fix :oops:

Thanks anyways, otherwise loving the program so far ;) Keep up the good work :D
