Action is bugging out?

So I've been using action for a few days using the free trial and all and I decided to try to record a game in fullscreen mode. After trying to record it without success I noticed that action was seemingly constantly recording but the recording timer wasn't counting up. When I try recording in Active desktop region it will automaticly start recording for no reason whatsoever. This is really weird and annoying because I want to start recording at my own time and I don't know what to do! When I hit the X button to stop the recording it just exits the desktop mode and starts recording a separate file. So I end up having to random screens recorded for no reason. Please help me!
