AMD APP vs Intel QuickSync

For those people who are lucky to have an ATI / AMD GPU, i suggest using AMD APP rather than QuickSync

My experience so far (dating about 1 year of trial and errors)

QuickSync
- Only works with a perfect setup of drivers (Intel, AMD, VirtuMVP... etc.)
- Very High performancehit (30-40 % FPS loss)
most likely because CPU IO takes a high toll , which then damage game IO
- Video Image Quality is generally terrible, 1080p30 and 720P60 looks okay mostly.. but very often you see small squares all over !!
- Video output is not compressible (x264 can't recompress bad video)

AMD APP
- Just released with Action 1.17
- I'm now recording at 1080p60 with ZERO performancehit !!! (i don't know how this magic is done !? - but i like it)
- Video Quality is absolutely flawless
- Video is compressible (because the images are fluent)
- Vidoe Filesize is acceptible: 720p60 = 130MB/min , 1080p60 = 200MB/min

So, for everyone with a big fat AMD GPU out there, i recommend AMD APP over QuickSync

That is nice, I will give it a try on my laptop. I still wish they would let us have more control over the bitrate/quality settings. Sometimes even the lowest setting isn't low enough for me, other times I want to max it out.

I tried out the AMD APP on my laptop w/ 7970M GPU. Not really great for me as I mostly record desktop currently, and this made the GPU fan run fairly loudly continuously. Whereas with Quicksync the cpu fan usually doesn't even come on. So doesn't seem very power efficient in comparison. Maybe I will use it for recording games though.

When recording desktop, it doesn't really make any difference weather you use QuickSync, AMD APP or MP4 (standard)...

The quality is the same and the filesize is most likely also the same...

the pull on system ressources for encoding is minimal ...

UNLESS !! - you are encoding live video on the desktop

How did you get AMD APP to work, i've tried from 13.11 to latest beta drivers, and neither gave me an option to use it in mirillis. Unless 6xxx series are not supported?

according to http://developer.amd.com/tools-and-sdks ... atibility/

6xxx series are also supported... but there might be feature differences ?

i dont know actually - i instelled version 1.17.1 and then AMD App was available. :!: :?:

Yeah, I checked too and saw APP is apparently supported, but like you said, might be some feature difference.
Also saw someone mentioning that your card needs VCE to be supported too, don't know if it's true, and can't seem to find the page again unfortunately.
Hopefully someone else can shed some light on this, don't want to waste more time if my gpu isn't supported at all.
