Action! - Micro stuttering, frame drops, program conflicts.

Sat Aug 09, 2014 12:41 pm

OS: Windows 8.1 64bit
CPU: AMD FX - 8350 8x 64bit 4ghz
Video Card: Nvidia 660Ti
Memory: 8 GB DDR3 1600
Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080 - 1080p
Video Editor: Adobe CC
Game Problem: ALL! - BF4 as test.
Video Type: AVI @ 60fps + Multichannel
HDD - 3 Terabyte @ 162 write speed and 192 read. (Bench marking shows that Action uses around 60 mbps write speed with 60fps + 5.1 surround sound).

The problem seems to been mentioned many times before and to be honest I have tested everything. I have vast experience in video capturing professionally but Action! stuttering alludes me. Every so often without reason frames will be dropped, then the audio offsets to match this. At first I thought it was due to FPS dipping in game, so I dropped BF4 to lowest settings and get over 200fps. It still happened. Went back to normal settings and still got 120fps, recording then drops to lock at 60fps but still has these issues.

In theory this should not even cause a stutter as frames are held onscreen by the GPU and should still flow during capture. All hardware devices I have used never had issues when a 60fps input dropped to even 20.

Before questions of my CPU are doubted I have over 72% free when playing Crysis 3 at Max, Action! rarely peaks 8% CPU usage, so therefor like my dedicated recording HDD there is a substantial margin for error which so far points this to a software issue.

I have even tested by disabling all anti virus during some tests and issues persist. Using the mobile application again further confirm a solid frame rate of 60fps continuously which begs the question why the recording operates in bursts.

Now what I do have which nobody has raised is HPET - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Precision_Event_Timer enabled through command prompt in windows to increase performance. This sadly is not something I can easily disabled to test this theory nor should see the need to as a customer.

I will provide a video sample asap after I run a few more tests as otherwise this software will not meet my requirements for the project it was purchased for.

Also Action! on Game mode conflicts with Microsoft Office 2013 and causes violent flashing of the UI.

*Edit just noticed something interesting and doing even more tests. The built in player does not drop frames, yet using Windows Media Player as part of K-lite Codec pack (Pretty much the standard for video playback) there are alot of dropped frames. Will update if frames are dropped in Adobe CC Premiere asap.

*Update 10th August 2014*

Been gathering a lot of material to test editing in Adobe when I discovered more Action! Problems.

1)Having Action open will crash ANY Microsoft Office 2013 program when set to game mode.
2) Recording in 120fps mode CANNOT be played back in Actions video player. Attempting to play in any other application gives conflicts causing dropped frames which actually do not exist within the recorded file!

Now for Feature Requests:
1)Mobile Application to allow me to select and delete files when not recording, OR even a shortcut button to delete last recording. Reason? There is no rewind recording mode so therefor I must constantly record, often little to nothing happens worth while causing mass waste of recorded space.
2)Show recordings current file size in recording ui in game? Again lack of shadow/rewind features means I got to constantly micro manage everything.

*Still need to test drop frame playback issue in Adobe which will be done today.

*Final Update*
From all my tests the dropped frames do NOT exist but are a issue with playback outside the Action! player, such as MPC-HC and CyberLink PowerDVD 14.
HOWEVER, 120fps does not playback in the Action! video player and causes massive conflicts with Adobe Premiere CC 2014 during editing. So far I have not been successful solving this.

Unfortunately Action! player has not been adjusted yet to play 120 fps videos, but as you have mentioned most of video editing software support 120 fps videos.
