How am I suppose to edit these export files?

Sat Dec 10, 2011 12:19 am

First, I'd like to say Action! is probably one of the best programs I've used in a very long time. I am very impressed with it's recording performance. Exporting however is disappointing. For whatever reason, it appears the export .mp4 container has some sort of proprietary header or something abnormal as I can't get Premiere CS5.5 to import the file type. I do import .mp4's regularly from other formats and do not have issues. It appears to be an issue for many people exporting. Premiere is my primary editing program. Do the dev's have any other suggestions? What programs do you recommend I use to convert the file to an acceptable format? I'm unable to convert the file in any of my other programs - they just spit out errors also.

You can use Virtualdub to convert mp4s to some other format. Drag and drop won't work. You must manually select file type "DirectShowSource" in open dialog to successfully open mp4 file.

I downloaded VirtualDub, however I have no file type "DirectShowSource" available to me. As far as the open filetype options, .mp4 is not supported?

VirtualDub doesn't support mp4 (and mkv too) containers. Maybe he is speaking about VirtualDubMod or something like that.
Anyway, using VDub for encoding video to H.264 is worst idea.
However you can use it to recompress it using some loseless codec like UTvideo and then open in any NLE (like Premiere or Vegas).
Also it's possible to use some tools (Avisynth and this plugin) to open video using not internal H.264 decoder, but external (like ffdshow).

I don't use Premiere, but I'm using Sony Vegas. I have some problems with exported video, but if I used "Auto" Profile everything was ok...

Anyway Mirillis is planning to release external decoder in future, so it would be possible to open recorded video in NLE's without exporting.

PS Vita, Nokia N8

Oh I forgot Vdub needs plugin to open Direct Show videos.

Well I appreciate the help, but after it created the 47GB avi file, it must not have buffered the audio correct as it cuts out every 1/2 second and looks awful as far as compression (and the file is almost too large to even work with).

I hope mirillis gives us some sort of an accepted format to work with because it seems I have 4 hours of great footage that is wasted, and I'll have to re-record with fraps.

We will add probably export to uncompressed avi to quickly solve some compatibility problems with 3rd party video editing software. We will try to include this in next update.

We are also investigating problem with mp4 file compatibility but we suspect problems in 3rd party software as exported mp4 files play fine on all popular
devices.

Ghost I appreciate the reply. I know the team is hard working on the next patch and I'm happy to hear we will have a format we can work with. I know it's the question you probably won't be able to answer, but is there any ballpark on when this update will happen? Are we talking weeks or months?

This is our priority at the moment about Action!
I hope this will be available in 1-2 weeks. Will try to keep this thread updated.
