Action! crash upon ending the recording process

Fri Jul 17, 2015 11:15 am

Hi guys,
we are currently investigating an issue where Action crash upon ending the recording process. It's mostly happening with MP4 format (both with hardware acceleration on and off). If you experience or experienced a similar issue please leave your feedback below.

Please post:
Your Action video recording settings
Your Action audio settings
DxDiag report of your PC

Does Action! crash only in MP4 format but not in AVI?
Do you use any external USB audio devices?

I have this problem with MP4/Quicksync recordings, but only with the newer Intel drivers. I have attached a zip file with two different dxdiags. One called "working" is with the older "3412" version Intel driver and never causes an Action crash at the end of recording. The other called "notworking" is the newest Intel driver (I have tried every recent Intel driver going back several versions for a year or so, they all have this issue with Action) which causes the problem. I don't use AVI. I don't use USB audio.

Action video recording settings:
active screen recording
mp4
720p
15 fps
record system sounds
allow multi-channel audio
microphone: always record
quality: low
bitrate (mp4): 100%
input range: 0-255
multicore recording: not checked
record mouse cursor & clicks: checked
overlay graphics: not checked

Action audio settings:
mp4 audio
allow multi-channel
record silence
microphone: always record
microphone settings: system default
volume: 100
record microphone to separate track: checked
system sounds: default device
audio balance is 10 system sounds and 90 microphone
aac 192kbps

other settings that are checked:
check for updates
hide hud during desktop recording
do not record hud in games
use hardware acceleration: quicksync
export mouse cursor & clicks

This might be fixed in the most recent versions of Action. I hadn't tested the most recent couple of versions with the latest Intel drivers until yesterday, but so far no crashes. If it does crash again, I'll post here.

Ok, crash happened again with latest Intel driver and Action version. So going back once again to the "3412" Intel driver.

I have definitely had this quite a few times as of late. I was actually recording something with epsxe. This program is already unstable enough as is, so it usually never worked if I didn't have it in windowed mode. That seemed to cause this to crash more often. But as of now, I'm not sure why this happens. Although, when I first started noticing the crashes was when I tried it with Steam -- which always worked fine before I tried to update.

I'm using MP4 as my conversion type. Here's some information about my computer:
Installed Memory : 16 GB
Processor Intel (R) Core(TM) i7-4790k CPU
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon R9 200 Series (and I did check for updates on this as well).
Computer Type: Desktop.
# of Displays: 1. I'm using a Haier television for my monitor. The resolution is 1360 x 768 Orientation Landscape.
Yes, I am using other USB for external audio. It's a microphone microphone -- CAD u37 is the model.
If it means anything, I'm actually on Windows 8.1.
Video size is 720p. I have heard that turning detect framerate stops the issue from occurring, but at the time of failure, it was on.

Also, if it means anything, windows STILL prompts me to update Action! Even after already reinstalling it and such, which leads me to believe that it might not be fully updating at least to the point that windows itself can recognize the update.

It's also worth noting, that the crashes seem more likely to happen the longer the recording is. So if you record something for 30 minutes, then stop, and then recording, it seems less likely to crash than if you recorded for an hour. ALSO, it should be noted that if you start and STOP it seems more likely to crash as well assuming that you have not turned Action off. I found that it crashed less frequently if I did a recording-- stopped, and then closed Action and then reopened it again.

I just bough action a few days ago and the program just crashed and the file got corrupted. it was the first time I ran it for long period of time. I was recording with active desktop, file format MP4 and Video size 1080p, frame rate 30 with every thing else checked off. The program is running on Amd FX 8320, 8gb, Readeon HD 7700 any way to recover the file ?

I've been trying 1.25.6 for a couple days with the newest Intel driver, and so far no more crashes. Possibly solved!
