PC Crashes when Recording With MP4 (AMD APP)

If I try to record gameplay with MP4 (AMD APP) setting sometimes it records for a few minutes, sometimes more before my pc crashes. My full PC crashes and I have to hit the power button to reset it. I want to use the MP4 recording because it produces smaller files which are easier to edit in programs like Sony Vegas than AVI. recording to AVI file type there are no problems, what could cause this? It has been happening for years now unfortunately, I didn't use to have this problem.
