HVEC not used for recording most of the time

Wed Jul 17, 2019 12:37 am

I've run into something I haven't quite been able to figure out how to solve.

I've selected NVENC HVEC as hardware acceleration, but the majority of my recordings (both regular and TimeShift) still end up being recorded with H.264/AVC. Only every now and then does a file appear to be truly encoded as H.265/HVEC.

Video settings are as follows:
  • File format: MP4
  • Video size: Original (Issue occurs with 1920x1080 and 1360x768, different screens that are swapped often. I will have a new, permanent monitor soon.)
  • Video framerate: 60 fps VFR
  • TimeShift: 4 minutes, output to 4GB RAM
  • Video quality: Normal
  • Bitrate (MP4): 100%
  • Input range: 0-255
  • Use multicore recording: enabled
I'm not sure if the Export settings apply when exporting to YouTube; NVENC HVEC is also selected there, but YouTube still reports avc1.

Thanks for the response. I browsed help articles beforehand and couldn't find this specific case anywhere. It might be good to update the following article with the information for others to come.
