Regarding FPS counter on the HUD

Sat Jul 24, 2021 10:54 am

Hello,

I've been scratching my head for a while, and eventually came here to seek help.

So I'm having a periodic micro stutter in the recordings. I've tried various options in Action!, but the issue doesn't seem to be related to a specific capture mode / file format / quality setting.

The sttuter is introduced in a very timely manner, so I believe it is rather a bad frame pacing issue. I set frame limit to 120 in Nnvidia Control Panel, and record in 60 so this really shouldn't be an issue. I decided to check the FPS counter on the HUD, and it showed 123 fps. It fluctuates; mostly stays in 123, and occasionally goes down to 120.

I closed Action!, checked fps with RTSS and it showed solid 120. I thought maybe NVCP fps limiter is not Action! - friendly, so set frame limit on RTSS and checked the HUD again. Now it showed 122fps, fluctuating in the same manner. Tried with 60 limit as well. The HUD showed 62fps, again fluctuating in the same manner.

Is this simply a HUD bug? Is this a known issue? Or Is it the case that Action! is injecting arbitrary frames and actually causing this frame pacing issue?

This is my machine's spec in case this matters:

Lenovo Legion 5 Pro
Ryzen 7 5800H
8GB RTX 3070 (140W)
32GB DDR4-3200
M.2 1TB Hynix P31 + 1TB Samsung 970 Evo

Any helpful input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Kooky,

Are you sure the refresh rate of the display is solid 120Hz? There might be 61 or 121 on HUD sometimes (small calculation error etc. since the fps is calculated second by second without any long term smoothing) but the recording should be perfect nevertheless. Micro stutter can happen if internal recording time frame difference estimator decides that there is one frame too many and should be dropped or extended. You could disable audio and record only video and check if it helps.

Just double checked that the FPS is probed every... 20ms. I think this is a bug because the frame lasts 16.6666..ms and this will result in wrong FPS number. Even more error can happen in 120Hz since the frame lasts 8.333...ms.

So in 60Hz there can be 59..61FPS displayed, and in 120Hz 118..122.

We will fix this (increase probing to 5ms). But again the capturing engine is not using these numbers.

BTW. This bug is present since year 2012.

Hi Kooky,

You can download updated core dlls to check if HUD fps is more precise (please overwrite those already located in installation folder)

https://downloads.mirillis.com/files/be ... on_x86.dll
https://downloads.mirillis.com/files/be ... on_x64.dll

Hope this works 100% correct now and thank you for reporting this problem.

Thank you for the replies!

Alright, I've replaced the DLL files and the accuracy of the FPS counter on the HUD definitely improved (Fluctuating between 120 and 121 only now). The stutter is, unfortunately, still present.

Regarding the stutters, I haven't observed any so far in 60fps limit + 60fps capture. The stutter is only present in 120fps limit + 60fps capture.

I've cross tested with Windows' built-in capture tool and OBS (120fps limit + 60fps capture), and the stutter is only introduced with Action!. The stutter almost feels and looks like when a blank frame is inserted on odd frames. Like when you render 59.843 fps as 60 fps.

I really hope this issue can be resolved, so I can use Action! for games in 120fps as well.

Again, thanks in advance. Looking forward to some helpful inputs.

Can you let me know if the stuttering appears in 120fps limit + 120fps capture?

I've just checked 120 limit + 120 capture and there was no stutter in the recordings.

Also, I've recorded the same scene twice each in (120 +120) and (120 + 60). The filesize of the two recordings are virtually the same. Shouldn't it be more like; the higher the FPS is, the bigger the size gets?

It depends. If you have "Force bitrate" selected then size will be the same. Otherwise it depends on GPU vendor, hardware encoder revision etc.
