Problem recording system audio on Windows 11

Mon Apr 28, 2025 7:11 am

I am using the latest version of Windows 11 to record screen and system audio. However, when I start recording, the software does not pick up sound from the system, even though I have selected the correct output device in the settings.

I have tried double checking the audio settings and making sure no other software is using the audio device, but the problem persists.

Has anyone encountered a similar problem or have a solution to fix it?

Here are the troubleshooting steps:
- Right-click the speaker icon in the system tray.
- Select "Sound Settings".
- Scroll down to "More Sound Settings" (under "Advanced"). This will open the classic Sound Control Panel.
- Go to the "Recording" tab.
- Right-click any empty space and make sure "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected Devices" are checked.
- Look for "Stereo Mix", "What U Hear" or a similar loopback device.
- If found, right-click it and select "Enable".
- Right-click again and select "Set as Default Device" (or "Set as Default Communication Device" if you want to check that too).
- In your screen recording software, now select "Stereo Mix" (or equivalent) as the input audio source.
- Check the recording.

You might want to double-check the "App volume and device preferences" in Sound settings and make sure the recording software has microphone/system audio permissions under Privacy & Security settings. Also, if you're using something like Xbox Game Bar or a third-party app, trying an alternative like OBS Studio could help isolate the problem. Hope you get it sorted soon—let us know if you find a fix!
