What is the point of the Game/Applications recording mode?

Sat May 18, 2013 3:39 am

Is there a purpose to the Game and Applications recording mode? When I use it in games it seems to drop my FPS a lot, but if I set the game to Fullscreen Windowed and use the Desktop recording mode instead, I get next to no drop in FPS and the video looks just as good as far as I can tell.

Depends on the game you are trying to record. I have come across games with the same issue you expanded now, works better with desktop recording.

It's not an Action! issue, it's the way the game is made.

Doing game recording with the game in windowed mode permit me to avoid the fps drop as well and has the advantage of not having to set a recording zone with desktop recording

Well, so far I have tried recording in 3 games (Grim Dawn, Chivalry and Star Conflict) and with all 3 of them, Desktop mode is the way to go. Considering Action has a recording mode just for games, you would expect it to just be the mode to use period.

If it is normal for Desktop mode recording to better in some/most games, then this should should be clearly written on the website as I have a feeling that most people do not know this.

It seems to be recent games so fore sure they meet the requirements ! I think there should be a new way of handling games recording by allowing to detect when the .exe of the game of our choice is launched. We would add to a list the .exe we want Action! to listen. A bit like the nvidia control panel 3d settings optimus which permit to use a specific GPU depending on the application we want

When i record video mix in full screen i have also a strange behaviour which is that it doesn't record in 720p. If i put it in window mode but stay with a resolution on 720p it records well in a 720p resolution. This with game recording mode.

So it seems the game recording need a few improvements

All of the games I have listed are quite recent and definitely DX9 or higher.
