Play broken files

Wed Feb 10, 2010 2:32 am

Hi!!

I have been a great fan of VLC for a long time. But then I ran in to Splash! HAHA what a great piece of software. Keeping everything basic, while still having a great interface! Nice Job!

One small problem. When I begin to download a video file from my ftp server I can immediately start playing that file with VLC before it is completely downloaded. VLC tells me the file is broken and Asks if I want to continue, I simply say yes. Splash just says "Failed to open Input file". Is there a way to force SPlash to play the file anyway? Or is there some other solution?

Let me know! thanks!

Hi and thanks for feedback!

At the moment Splash does not support playback of not fully downloaded files.
We are considering to add this feature in future releases.

Well...
It's possible to:
1) pause downloading
2) open video in Splash
3) use Unlocker (free tool for removing lock from files) on the video file to remove Splash lock
4) continue downloading

This works, but of course Splash becomes unstable - so it's strongly not recommended. This can cause damage to your computer, blah, blah, blah :)
Seriously, it could result in broken file - so use it with caution and only if you know what are you doing.

Sometimes it's possible to just unlock file from your download manager, than open in Splash.

Another thing you can try is "DivFix" if your working with incomplete avi files then DivFix can repair incomplete avi files and you can then watch them. That is if your un-raring a rar set and don't have the whole thing and just want to check out part of the movie.
I haven't found anything that works nicely with mkv files though.
