Corrupted Video Files

Mon Jan 11, 2021 3:48 pm

Hi there everyone I'm at a bit of a loss and I hope someone can help me. I've been a happy and loyal customer of the Action Recorder for almost five years now. However at the start of 2020, I began to ran into a problem I haven't been able to figure out. Apparently the recorder works just fine for recording 20 minutes or shorter, however, anything longer than that results in a corrupted video file and I can't seem to recover any video or audio footage from it. I really like this software and would love to keep using it but not when I essentially have to be worried about the length of time being a ticking time bomb essentially. Any help would be appreciated.

OS: Windows 10
Video Card: Geforce GTX 1660
Memory: 15GB
Monitor Resolution: 1920x1200

Hello,
thank you for contacting us. Please provide us more information about your problem:
Details about recording settings
Does problem occurs both for AVI and MP4 recordings?
Does it occur every time you record longer video?
Does it occur for every game or only for a 1 title or a few?
Does problem occurs when recording to lower resolution (480p)?
Does it occurs when recording in lower fps (30p)?
Does it occur when recording Windows desktop?

Hi there! Thank you so much for getting back to me on this issue. I went down the list of questions that you asked me, troubleshooting as I went along and the trouble stopped when I chose the quality to be 480p and it even worked at 720p. So far this change in setting has essentially solved the problem! If I encounter any further issue, I'll post here but it seems as though the issue has been resolved! Thank you so much!

Hello! Thank you so much for getting back to me! This is what I've discovered so far:
  • Does problem occurs both for AVI and MP4 recordings?
Yes, this occurs for both AVI and MP4 recordings
  • Does it occur every time you record longer video?
After changing settings to a lower resolution and FPS, I seem to hit the 32 mark okay but anything beyond that gets corrupted.
  • Does it occur for every game or only for a 1 title or a few?
So far, after the changes made, it only occurs for one game "Alba: A Wildlife Adventure" when trying to recording for 45 minutes. I have not tried recording that long with other games.
  • Does problem occurs when recording to lower resolution (480p)?
I have noticed that the problem stops occurring when I switch to 480p or 720p. However as preciously mentioned for one game, if I record for 45 minutes, it still corrupts the file.
  • Does it occurs when recording in lower fps (30p)?
    Same as above for resolution.
  • Does it occur when recording Windows desktop?
Yes, it also occurs in this mode as well.

What exactly happens when you make long recording. Does Action! hang when saving video and video cannot be played?

Do you save video on external or internal drive?

When saving something longer than 31 minutes it hangs for a while but eventually it acts as if it finished saving the video. However when I try to view it, I get an error saying that the file is corrupted. I usually save on an external hard drive.

Try saving on internal drive, SSD will be even better.

Well I'll be darned, you were absolutely right. For some reason the program has trouble saving things to an external hard drive that are too big. Once I started saving them to one of the internal hard drives, I stopped having file corruption issues. Thank you so much for helping me troubleshoot this!
