Motion² CPU Usage

Mon Aug 02, 2010 5:29 am

First of all, I would like to say that Mirillis Splash is THE BEST player I have ever had the opportunity of using.

Now, onto the problem:

When utilizing Motion² and playing H.264 @ 1920x1080, 23.976fps, ~7.5Mbps, DTS content my CPU utilization shoots up to ~90-100% usage on my HTPC running Phenom II 555BE @3.8ghz, ATI 4200 (On Board), 4gb DDR3-1333mhz.

The only reason I am concerned with this is that on my laptop (i5-430m @2.527ghz, ATI 4670, 4gb DDR3-1333mhz) my cpu usage is only ~40-55% playing the same file.

Since they are pretty similar performing CPUs, I have to imagine the difference is in the graphics power. Is this the case? If not, why the huge discrepancy in usage?

edit: Unlocked my 555BE to quad core and that alleviated most of the stress; however, usage is still around 70% and the Phenom x4 B55 is much faster than my i5-430m in my laptop.

Oddly enough, disabling hardware acceleration through ATI seems to help alleviate some of the problems. The CPU usage is almost the same (lower in some cases); however, motion² seems to be running better without the graphics card intervening.

So, if you are experiencing high cpu usage or jerky motion² playback, I would suggest just disabling hardware acceleration and see if that solves your issue.

That sounds about right... The i5 CPU's annihilate majority of the Phenom dual core and quad core CPU's in any threaded environment. Applications make better use of the hyper threading technology than clock speed and cores. Your i5 is a way better CPU for interpolation.

It's not really a big deal, as long as it's not hitting 100% cpu on movies. But, I just honestly don't see how a dual core laptop processor with HT is better for interp than a physical quad core processor with about 1.2ghz faster clock speed.
