slight micro-stutter / judder @ 30 fps recording

Sat Mar 23, 2013 8:58 am

I've been experimenting a lot with Action to get the best gameplay and video recording, yesterday i succeeded in finding that 1080p30 is the best for me...

however !!

When i play in 2560x1440 i get micro-stutter or judder ... but if i play in 1920x1080 i dont.
- 1920x1080 is not an option for me, because it makes the games look ugly, and there are many more issues with that resolution...

I think its the scaler/scaling that causes this problem ??? :|
I hope you can look into what might cause the problem

hardware: Core i7 3770k, ATI 7970, 16 GB RAM, SSD for recording.
Game settings: Vsync OFF (getting 50-80 fps)
Action Settings: QuickSync, 1080p 30 fps, High-quality setting.

A few people have reported stutter when recording, myself only when I record in WoW which is weird as it works fine in any other game. I really hope they find a solution for this soon, as it would be nice to be able to use Action for all my games.

Could you confirm that your issue occurs also with higher resolution than 1920x1080?

might be relevant: http://www.anandtech.com/show/6857/amd- ... dmap-fraps

after reading the article, it seems that AMD has problems with stuttering in games.. the stuttering begins when system resources aren't enough to render 60 FPS... (or enough to render fast enough that your wont notice stuttering)

Action seems to pull just enough power that stuttering in BF3 becomes visible for me...

The solution to the issue is two fold:

1. AMD needs to update their drivers to reduce stuttering in BF3 (DX 11 games - they are working on DX10 atm.)

2. Mirillis Action should work to reduce the amount of CPU / GPU cycles needed to grab video...
2. Mirillis should lower the CPU Priority from Normal to Below Normal

in my case - i think im experiencing stuttering because 2560x1440 is more demanding than 1920x1080 - and thus i experience stuttering because my hardware isn't fast enough :|
-------------------------------

Found a solution that seems to work

By lowering the CPU Priority from NORMAL to BELOW NORMAL for all 3 Action processes:
Action.exe *32
Action_x64.bin
Action_x86.bin*32

After doing this, i don't experience stuttering !!! YAY !
The video result is the same: 1080p30 .. no difference in any way.
i tested NORMAL and BELOW NORMAL - the video result is the same !!

WOOOP !

----------------------------
Here is a script to make a BAT file, that sets the CPU Priority:

wmic process where name="Action.exe" CALL setpriority 16384
wmic process where name="Action_x64.bin" CALL setpriority 16384
wmic process where name="Action_x86.bin" CALL setpriority 16384

Great to hear that! We will run some test on lowered priority and check out the results. If everything will work smooth Action! will run on lowered priority as default.

I think the reason why i can easily lower the priority is because i run in QuickSync mode..

QuickSync is not dependent on CPU as much as AVI (non-QuickSync) .. actually... my CPU runs at 3% when i play BF3 and record with Action

So .. maybe the priority should only be lowered for QS

Do you mean "as much as cuda". When you record in mp4 or avi with QS there is a difference in CPU usage ?

I dont have CUDA since i have an AMD(Asus 7970) system.
AVI is encoded with CPU power, using the Mirillis Codecs...

Don't know about higher, but it does in lower resolution for a friend of mine that runs with 1680x1050.
