Suggestions for Action!

Mon Nov 04, 2013 2:50 pm

Here's a couple of things i thought would be nice in Action!:

Custom codecs

Basically what this means is Action! would support almost any codec beside FICV. Not saying i don't want to it but it adds variety. H.264 and hardware accerelerated support are probably out of the question since h.264 is already in use for quick sync and hardware acceleration is used for exporting. But UT Video and Lagarith might be example codecs you could add support for.

File growth

Got this idea a few days ago while i tried PlayClaw. A counter in the HUD would show me how big the file is getting while i record. For example, recording on 1min would show it passing somewhere at 0,750gb/750mb, 2mins for 1,04gb/1,047mb and so on, depending the settings. This is especially useful on low HDD space, i would know how much space has been taken.

Note that this is just my opinion, i don't know if it's possible to add these.

Nice idea, would be great to see recorded file sizes.

And it seems we might see this sooner rather that later, great!

If i can rise this topic up, one more thing i would also like for Action!: expand DirectX version support. I think you know what i mean. Considering that Action! is only a few years old, it's understandable it's doesn't support everything right away, but it would be a BIG plus for you to do that.

Some offtopic: Okay i'm stupid for asking this but please enlighten me, does the MP4 format use h.264 encoding or hardware acceleration? Or is hardware acceleration ONLY used for exprting? I'm actually disappointed in a way. I don't really export anything and i don't plan on doing it either, i'd use HA (shortage for now) for video encoding to keep quality and performance. But considering FICV being unique, i think it'll make up for it.

Hardware Acceleration is available for MP4 recording with Intel Quick Sync technology (real-time video encoding).
